The Great Slave Lowland of the Taiga Shield is an 11, km 2 low-elevation granitic bedrock plain along the north shore of Great Slave Lake, Northwest Territories. It is characterized by a mosaic of coniferous and deciduous forest cover, wetlands, sparsely vegetated bedrock outcrops, and peatlands.

The geology of the Northwest Territories has been mapped in different quadrangles by the Canadian government. The region has some of the oldest rocks in the world and among the oldest in North America, formed from several sections of stable craton continental crust, including the Slave Craton, Rae Craton and Hearne Craton.
These rocks form the Archean Northwest Territories book Proterozoic Precambrian basement. Lake map-area falls entirely in the Great Slave Plain physiographic region (see location map, Figure 1). 4 Bedrock geology was mapped by the Geological Survey on Operation Mackcnzte in (Douglas and Norris, ).
