The answer is yes, and through Bach & God’s seven essays, a multivalent and luminous image of J. Bach as a “musical-religious interpreter” appears (13). Marissen’s book is divided into four parts, and while the essays were individually published across three decades, Bach & God mostly feels like a cohesive whole.

Best Books on Bach I grew to become an adept of Bach last year and read several books that I loved. Perhaps they will be of interest to folks wanting to learn more about this iconic and fascinating composer at the core of baroque music and a key influence on the classical and romantic waves that followed.
Bach singles out passages describing music as a vessel of divinity: in one note, he observes that music was “especially ordered by God’s spirit through David,” and in another he writes. Bach the universal genius freely mixed compositional materials—dances as obbligatos to chorale tunes, dance rhythms organizing large concerto-like pieces for chorus and orchestra, dance music expressing texts of the most intimate sacred cantata arias, keyboard fugues which could be danced to, at least one cantata aria with two different dance.
For that reason Bach must remain a closed book to those for whom the category of divinity is meaningless, and hence deny that it is possible "to make divine things human and human things divine." Music — even Bach's music — cannot be "divine" unless God is a presence, unseen and perhaps unconscious, in our lives.
From Bach and the Dance of God it is clear that this composite study is not to be confined to musical works of an overtly sacred genre. The lingering medieval mind of Bach’s Lutheran heritage, Mellers believes, equated or all but equated the sacred and the secular spheres, so that the entire body of Bach’s music is, in the deepest sense.
